Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection is a significant and independent risk factor for Gastric Cancer and peptic ulcer disease. The spiral shaped gram negative bacterium is also the most important cause of chronic gastritis which, if left untreated, leads to atrophy of the gastric mucosa.
Urease tests are used routinely in endoscopy to detect the presence of Hp in gastric biopsies during gastroscopy. These fast, reliable and convenient point of care tests for diagnosing Hp have evolved significantly since their introduction in the 1980s and as a result have advanced the quality of care as well as the quality of service for patients referred for endoscopy.
Urease tests work by detecting the presence of Urease enzyme in biopsy specimens - an enzyme produced by Hp. Now that ultra fast urease tests are available, reliable diagnosis can be made in just 5 minutes allowing the opportunity to test, report and treat the patient in a single appointment at the point of care.
BIOHIT manufactures two urease tests, both of which are supported by scientific publications affirming their accuracy and clinical performance against gold standard methods. We believe this is a fundamental requirement when delivering advanced urease tests.
